‘Tis the season for making new year’s resolutions, and if you are like many, you are striving to get organized this year. The biggest storage area most of us have is the garage, and it’s very common to have so many items in the garage that it’s hard to find room to park the car. Even if you do park in the garage, you might have to squeeze past storage totes, bicycles, and sawhorses or tables set up with various projects. Getting the
garage organized
doesn’t have to become one of those abandoned resolutions. Read on to learn about how you can take control of your garage clutter, find a place for everything you need to store in the space, and stop feeling embarrassed when you open your garage door and see your neighbors in front of your driveway.
Make Your Plan
Before you do anything, you need to make a plan. Are you going to organize your garage yourself or call in
professional garage organizers? What kind of
garage accessories
do you need? Think about the types of items you have in your garage and how you want to keep them organized.
- Garage cabinets
of various sizes and shapes are great for keeping your belongings protected from dust, insects, and other elements that are common in garages.
- Wall storage (slatwall, for example) gives you the option of hanging various items and holders on the wall.
- Specific holders like one for your ladder, one for paint cans, one for aerosol cans, and so on can help you keep the floor space clear.
You might not know quite yet how many items you need to store. You might not even know exactly what you have if it’s been a while since you last organized the garage! But making a loose plan now will help you later because you’ll already have a partial vision in mind.
Call in Reinforcements to Empty the Garage
The hardest part of organizing the garage is often emptying it out in the first place. This is time-consuming, and many hands make light work. Choose a day or a weekend that does not have rain, snow, or freezing weather in the forecast. The spring is often the best time for this type of project, though it could be done anytime as long as the skies are clear. Invite friends over to empty your garage. Feed them lunch in return. With several strong friends, you can probably accomplish this within a couple of hours, depending on how much you have stored in the garage.
Having one person directing where to put items or moving them him- or herself into sections that make sense is also helpful. Boxes and totes with items to go through should be placed in one area. Furniture should have its own area, as should tools. You might be surprised by what you find, so create more categories as needed.
Give the garage a good sweep when everything is out. You could also hose it out and scrub it with a deck brush if it’s particularly dirty.
Make Piles for Donations, a Yard Sale, and Trash
The best way to accomplish this task is to make quick decisions. If you tend to be sentimental, having a ruthless friend or two can help you get through the process efficiently. For every item you pick up, ask yourself when the last time you used it was. If it’s been over a year, decide whether it should be donated, sold, or trashed.
Have boxes available to put donation items in immediately. By the time you are done cleaning out the garage, you should be stacking those boxes in your car with the plan to drop them off at your favorite thrift shop within the next couple of days. Keeping them around longer than that is just asking for the items to move back into your garage.
If you will really have a yard sale within the next couple of months, you can box up those items and stack them in one corner of the garage (a front corner is easiest). If you doubt it, just donate those items as well. The amount of money you might get for them is not worth having them take up excess space in your garage.
Take Advantage of Your Wall Space
Shelves (preferably mounted on the wall), a slatwall system, and
garage cabinets
are all good options for holding items along the perimeter of the garage. Try to keep things off of the center of the floor, because that is where you are going to be parking your vehicle(s). Keep as many items as possible tightly against the wall but off of the floor. This will protect them from moisture and most insect infestations.
Use the Space Overhead
For items like bicycles and bins filled with seasonal items, consider overhead storage. Many people forget about their ceilings when it comes to storage space. Overhead racks should be installed so they don’t interfere with your garage door. Your
professional garage organizer
will be able to do this easily. If you are doing it yourself, be mindful of where the garage door goes and avoid that area.
Put in a Work Area
If you like to work on projects in your garage, a workbench is a great addition. It will hold your tools and also provide you with a clear, flat surface. Even if you aren’t particularly drawn to projects, you might be surprised at how useful a workbench in the garage really is. Look at the different options available to add to your storage space.
