What Does A Custom Closet Cost? A Custom Closet Breakdown

Neil Rohrbacker • March 17, 2016
Many people often think that getting a custom closet in your New Jersey home is too expensive. “Oh, that’s for the 1%”, or “I’m not one of those reality TV stars like Kim Kardashian with 500 pair of shoes!”. Well, I got news for you, you don’t have to be rich, nor a TV star to get a closet organizer in New Jersey that can make a difference in your life.

The median home price in Morris County NJ is almost $440K, in Bergen County it’s more than $470K, that’s more than double the national average, so installing a custom closet in NJ is a very sound investment. With prices per square foot so high in New Jersey, maximizing your expensive space makes even more sense. Consider a walk-in closet that is 8×10. At a price of $200/square foot, that’s a $16,000 closet! Now, what if I told you I can make that space 60% more efficient? That’s almost $10,000 worth of optimized additional space. Now that $5,000 closet doesn’t seem so expensive does it? In fact, I would say it’s a bargain. Many of the closets we install from Morristown, NJ and Hillsborough, NJ to the shorelines of Hoboken and Englewood, New Jersey are actually under $2,000.

A typical New Jersey closet organizer system in the popular white melamine will run you about $100-150 per lineal foot of wall space. This basic system would not have any drawers or doors in it, but it would be very functional in optimizing the space for regular hang clothes likes shirts, blouses and pants, long hang dresses as well as shelving for folded items like sweaters, t-shirts and workout clothing.

If you were to add drawers, doors and other additional options you are start to be in the $150-200+ per lineal foot range. If you have enough space in your walk-in closet, then this can be very beneficial. Now you can store most of your clothing in the closet which makes getting ready in the morning mush easier and faster. It also opens up space in your bedroom if you remove the dresser. Not everyone can do this, especially with most older homes in the northern counties of New Jersey such as Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex, etc., are shall we say, closet challenged.

Well, with many of these older homes in Northern New Jersey outfitted with smaller reach-in style closets, one might think that maybe I don’t need to spend any money to organize such a small space. The truth is, these are the spaces that need the most help. Any reach-in closet that has a shelf and pole can be optimized to increase the storage capacity of the space. These small closet organization systems are not only very affordable, but are great bang for the buck projects in your New Jersey home. They will also go a long way when you go to sell your home in the future. CBS News has an article that lists closets as one of the Top 5 renovations that payoff. The Huffington Post also ran an article that lists organizing closets in their Top 10 Home Improvement Projects .

So, think smart when looking at your closets. I speak to some clients and they start thinking about selling their New Jersey home and it would be nice to have the closets organized. I say, put in that custom closet organizer now so you can enjoy a more organized life today! They’ll still be there when time comes to sell your home and the new homeowner will thank you when that time comes (hopefully with a higher price).
