If there’s one constant in all my years of renovating homes, it’s that homeowners will always be looking for ways to make the most of their garage space. There never seems to be enough room in even the most spacious of garages, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
Before using your cabinets, the rest of your garage needs to be in order. From making better use of your wall space to using overhead storage, having designated storage areas, and more, I’ve got the tips you need to effectively utilize your garage cabinets for better organization.
Once you’re ready to get started, you should:
Now that I’ve given you the basics, it’s time to dig into the details and see how to put them to use in your home.
Before making better use out of your garage cabinets, you paradoxically need to better organize the entire rest of your garage first. One of the best ways to get this done is through the use of your garage’s existing wall space.
Maybe you prefer wall-mounted hooks, or shelving units, or perhaps you’d like to do what the pros at Better Homes & Gardens suggest and use a pegboard unit to get everything in order. Whatever you choose, I highly recommend making the most of your garage wall space.
Once you’ve conquered the wall space in your garage, the next place I think you should look to is your overhead storage space. Garage cabinets can easily get cluttered with oversized items that don’t need to be there, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
With the simple addition of an overhead storage area, you can free up space in your garage cabinets while keeping oversized items always within easy reach. You really can have the best of both worlds.
As with everywhere else in the home, I’ve seen the most success in garage spaces when homeowners set up designated storage areas for all of their tools and other items. If you can’t find where anything is, it’ll be all too easy for clutter to accumulate.
On the flip side of that, by having a set place for everything, you’ll be able to find whatever you need and have more room to work with in your garage cabinets, too.
Now that you’ve gotten the rest of your garage in order, it’s time to finally turn to your garage cabinets themselves. One big mistake I’ve seen homeowners make time and time again is to leave their garage cabinets exactly as they got them.
Instead of sticking with stock, feel free to rearrange and adjust shelves to suit your needs. When everything is set up the way you need it, it’ll be that much easier to keep your garage cabinets neat and organized.
Getting your garage cabinets in order doesn’t have to be difficult, and it all starts with getting the rest of your garage in shape. By following my tips and getting a little creative in your approach, you should have no problems at all getting your garage cabinets organized, neat, and looking great.
